Alnus inokuma Details

Alnus inokuma is a variety of Alder grown for its rich foliage and tolerance of wet soils. This is a fast growing, deciduous tree with dark green, rounded leaves which remain this colour well into autumn before falling. It grows with a narrow and upright habit, and can reach 25 m tall and 8 m wide, but is often trimmed to sizes less than this. It grows best when positioned in full sun and is tolerant of almost all soil conditions barring extreme dry. For this reason, it does well beside rivers, streams, and marshlands. It is tolerant of cool climates, frost, and moderate wind. The versatility of Alnus inokuma makes it a popular choice for growing as a specimen, using wind protection and screening on a farm or the like, or for avenue planting.
