Commonly known as Tawa, this is a large, NZ native tree. Its prominent feature are the masses of olive-shaped, purple fruits produced through autumn and winter which are favoured by birds, particularly Wood Pigeons. The tree grows to about 30 m tall and 15 m wide and bears mid-green foliage, and grows best on a well-drained site in full sun though it will tolerate a range of soil conditions, barring extreme wet and dry, partial shade, moderate frost, and cool climates. This tree is commonly grown as a specimen in parks, added to mixed plantings in larger gardens, used in revegetation plantings, or simply planted to attract birds.
