Betula costata is a variety of Birch grown for its stature and flaking bark. It grows with an upright and spreading habit, bearing lush, dark green leaves. The leaves are complemented by the fawn coloured trunk which has bark that continually flakes off. The leaves develop impressive golden tones through autumn before falling. Yellow catkins (small cones) are borne amidst the branches in spring and will often remain on the tree long after the leaves have fallen. It typically reaches 15 m tall and 10 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of coastal environments, moderate wind, cool climates, and frost. This Birch is well suited to large parks and gardens where it is often used as a specimen and shade tree. It also suits being used for screening and shelter where space affords.
