“Japonica” is a variety of Birch grown for its impressive, white stems and lovely form. It grows with an upright, conical habit and carries large, dark green leaves held on dark stems. The leaves and stems contrast well with the white trunk. Through autumn the leaves develop impressive golden tones before falling. Yellow catkins (small cones) are borne amidst the branches in spring and will often remain on the tree long after the leaves have fallen. It typically reaches 10 m tall and 6 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of coastal environments, moderate wind, cool climates, and frost. “Japonica” is well suited to large parks and gardens where it is often planted in clusters. It also suits being used for screening and shelter where space affords.
