Cercis canadensis Merlot, commonly known as Cercis Merlot Redbud, is a small tree grown for its colourful foliage and great form. The glossy, heart shaped leaves emerge dark purple in spring and remain this colour until autumn. As autumn progresses the foliage develops red and yellow tones before falling. Masses of small, pink blossoms are produced as the foliage emerges. It grows with a broad and rounded canopy to about 4.5 m tall and 3.5 m wide and can easily be contained with trimming. The Cercis Merlot Red Bud tree is commonly grown as a specimen, used in avenues, planted to border an entrance, or included in a mixed planting.
