Cordyline obtecta, commonly known as the Cabbage Tree, is a small, NZ native tree grown for its showy foliage. It grows with a solitary trunk, hosting rosettes of long and lush, bright green leaves. The foliage is complemented with white-yellow, fragrant flowers in spring which are followed by white-purple berries that attract birds. It will eventually reach 6 m tall and 4 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of coastal conditions, heavy and wet soils, dry periods, and moderate frost. Cordyline obtecta is commonly grown as a specimen or planted in clusters. Its simple form and great aesthetics allow it to blend with almost any planting.
