This variety of Corylus is grown for its attractive foliage and interesting catkins. This deciduous tree typically grows to 6 m tall and the same wide bearing deep purple, serrated leaves held on multiple stems. Flowers are produced in spring before the leaves emerge with pale yellow catkins resulting. These catkins age to brown and are held through most of the year. It grows best when planted on a well-drained, sheltered site in full sun, noting that it is tolerant of frost and cool climates. This Corylus is commonly grown as a specimen tree.
