The foliage is blue-green and turns a mix of yellow, red, orange, and red as autumn progresses before falling as it grows to 5 m tall and the same wide. The spent flower clusters in summer are pink-purple and resemble a puff of smoke. Cotinus obovatus, commonly known as the American Smoke Tree or simply as Smoketree, is a small, deciduous tree grown for its colourful foliage. The foliage is blue-green and turns a mix of yellow, red, orange, and red as autumn progresses before falling. It gets its common name from the billowy hairs on spent flower clusters in summer which are pink-purple in summer and resemble a puff of smoke. It typically grows to 5 m tall and the same wide, performing best on a well-drained, sheltered site in full sun. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and short periods of dry.
