Crataegus crus-galli, commonly known as the Cockspur Hawthorn, is a small tree grown for its autumn foliage and colourful fruit that last into winter. The leaves emerge glossy green in spring, quickly darken, then develop yellow and red tones in autumn before falling. The flowers in spring are white with an unusual scent, and develop into red fruits in summer which last on the tree for months as it grows to 10 m tall and 8 m wide. Crataegus crus-galli is commonly included as an attractive feature in a mixed planting but also suits being used as a backdrop for smaller plants, or being trimmed into a hedge.
