“Riversii” is a variety of European Beech that features a broad, spreading crown and stunning, purple foliage. The glossy leaves emerge deep purple in spring, age to purple-green in summer, then develop copper tones in autumn before falling. The flowers are small and green, and followed by bristly fruits in autumn. Left untrimmed it will eventually grow to about 18 m tall and 10 m wide, but can be contained as necessary. “Riversii” grows best in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. It is also hardy to moderate wind but will produce a better formed tree if well staked while it establishes. This is a fantastic shade tree and mature specimens make a dramatic statement in the landscape. It is also commonly used for avenue planting, hedging, screening, or added to mixed plantings in large gardens.
