Fagus sylvatica Dawyck Purple, commonly known as the Purple Beech tree, is grown for its beautiful colours and slender growth habit. The foliage emerges purple-red in spring, ages to become near black during summer, then develops shades of brown in autumn before falling. This purple leaf beech grows with an upright and almost columnar shape to about 12 m tall and 3 m wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. Fagus sylvatica Dawyck Purple is a fantastic tree and mature specimens make a dramatic statement in the landscape. It is also commonly used for avenue planting, screening, or added to mixed plantings in large gardens.
