Fagus sylvatica Red Obelisk Details

The Fagus sylvatica Red Obelisk beech tree is grown for its colourful foliage and slender growth habit. The lush foliage in spring emerges glossy and deep purple, and is held somewhat densely off rigid stems. As autumn progresses the leaves develop copper-bronze tones before falling. For the first 15 years it grows with a tight and columnar habit and thereafter tends to broaden out to eventually reach 20 m tall and 6 m wide. This variety grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, a wide range of soil conditions barring the extremes of wet and dry, and dry periods. A better formed tree will result if it is watered and staked while it establishes though. Fagus sylvatica Red Obelisk is a fantastic tree and mature specimens make a dramatic statement in the landscape. It is commonly used for street and avenue planting, screening, or added to a mixed planting in a large garden.
