The foliage comprises glossy, green leaves which develop red tones in the cooler months. New foliage also tends to emerge red-green. Large and showy, white flowers coat the plant from autumn through spring, with the flowers often described as resembling fried eggs. It typically grows to 5 m tall and 3 m wide, performing best when positioned in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is hardy to frosts, cool climates, coastal environments, and moderate wind but will produce a better tree if staked and protected while it establishes. Gordonia Red Tips makes a lovely specimen and is ideal for avenue planting, including in large cottage gardens, adding to a mixed planting, or trimming into a hedge.
