New foliage is particularly red which results in multi-colouring. The tree is adorned with light yellow flowers in spring. It grows with an upright habit to about 8 m tall and 5 m wide, though can be contained with trimming as necessary. This tree performs best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained, semi-sheltered site. It is tolerant of short periods of dry as well as light frost only once established. The Cottonwood Hibiscus is commonly grown as a showy specimen, used as an informal hedge, planted for screening, included in a mixed planting, added to a tropical garden, or planted around outdoor living areas.
