How to grow Hoheria lyallii (Mountain Lacebark) in NZ

Hoheria lyallii grows best in NZ when planted in a sunny or partially shaded position with well drained soil. It is tolerant of a wide range of soil types and thrives in both urban gardens and rural settings. Plant in autumn or spring to allow roots to establish before hot or dry conditions. Mulching around the base helps conserve soil moisture and reduces weed competition. With the right growing conditions, Mountain Lacebark establishes quickly and develops into a hardy and attractive tree.

Hoheria lyallii (Mountain Lacebark) care tips

Caring for Hoheria lyallii is straightforward, making it an excellent tree for both experienced and beginner gardeners. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy shape and remove any dead or crossing branches. Apply a slow release fertiliser in spring to encourage strong growth and abundant flowers. Water regularly during establishment and during dry spells, though once mature the tree is relatively drought tolerant. Its natural resilience makes it a low maintenance and rewarding choice.

Hoheria lyallii (Mountain Lacebark) size, spacing, and growth rate

Hoheria lyallii typically reaches 8–10 m tall and 4–5 m wide at maturity, forming an upright and spreading habit. Growth is moderate to fast, particularly when planted in full sun with good soil conditions. When planting in rows or groups, space trees about 4–5 m apart to allow adequate room for growth. Its attractive size and form make it suitable as a specimen tree, in native revegetation projects, or as part of larger landscape designs where height and seasonal interest are desired.

Landscaping uses for Hoheria lyallii (Mountain Lacebark)

Hoheria lyallii is highly valued in NZ landscaping for its seasonal beauty and ecological benefits. Its summer flowers attract bees and other pollinators, while the berries provide food for native birds. It is ideal for use as a specimen tree in lawns, in native garden plantings, or in shelterbelts. The tree’s elegant form and lace like bark add unique interest to any landscape. It works well in both formal and naturalistic designs, and complements other NZ native species beautifully.
