Hoheria populnea Purple Wave, commonly known as Purple Lacebark, is a quick growing, small, NZ native tree that features colourful foliage. The serrated leaves have a green topside and a purple underside, and are held densely on slender branches. The tree becomes smothered in white, blossom like flowers through summer. This evergreen grows quickly to about 5 m tall and 2.5 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It will tolerate dry periods, coastal environments, heavy soils, moderate frost, and some wind, though young trees should be protected while they are establishing.
