Wonder Tree, Idesia polycarpa, Igiri Tree, Shantongzi
Idesia polycarpa, commonly known as the Wonder Tree, is a deciduous tree grown for its foliage, flowers, and berries. It carries large, heart-shaped, dark green leaves which develop yellow and red tones in autumn before falling. Female trees produce large clusters of red berries that hang on the tree all winter and are great for attracting birds. It grows with a pyramidal shape to about 18 m tall and 8 m wide. Idesia polycarpa is commonly grown as a specimen in parks and large gardens, planted to provide winter colour, included in avenue plantings, or planted to attract birds.
