Liquidambar styraciflua, commonly known as Sweet Gum or American Sweetgum, is a popular ornamental tree due to its brilliant autumn colours. It features star-shaped leaves which emerge a rich green, darken with age, then develop a myriad of orange, red, and purple in autumn before falling. Small, green flowers appear in summer through autumn and result in hard, spiked fruits. This American Sweetgum typically grows to 10 m tall and 8 m wide with an upright and broad growth habit. Best results with this tree are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is hardy to frost, cool climates, and moderate wind but should be protected establishing. Liquidambar styraciflua makes for a lovely specimen and is great for avenue planting, growing for shade, or planting anywhere the spectacular autumn display can be enjoyed.
