Liriodendron chinense Details

Liriodendron chinense, commonly known as the Chinese Tulip Tree, is a deciduous tree favoured for its flowers and foliage. The flowers are olive green with a yellow base and are tulip like in size, shape, and appearance. They are borne from late spring through early summer and are complemented with large and glossy, dark green leaves which turn a rich shade of yellow in autumn before falling. The new foliage in spring is borne with purple overtones. It typically grows to 25 m tall and 15 m wide though can easily be contained with trimming. It grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site, and is hardy to frost and cool climates. We do recommend the tree be protected from strong winds while it is establishing which will help produce a better structured tree. Liriodendron chinense makes for a lovely specimen or shade tree and is suited more towards larger gardens and parks. It is also commonly used in avenue plantings.
