“Cameo” is an outstanding variety of Magnolia due to its spectacular and fragrant flowers. It bears masses of large and showy, purple and white flowers through late winter and early spring which are borne on the naked stems before the foliage emerges. The lush foliage emerges soon after and is dark green and takes on yellow tones in autumn before falling. It grows with a somewhat rounded habit to about 4 m tall and 3 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary. This variety grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. “Cameo” is commonly grown as a specimen, added to a mixed planting, included in cottage gardens, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, or trimmed into a hedge. The beauty of this tree will please no matter where it is planted.
