“Royal Purple” is a variety of Magnolia grown for its flowers and compact growth. Dark pink flower buds open in spring to reveal cup-shaped, rose-purple flowers. The blooms appear just before the lush, green leaves emerge. The leaves age to dark green in summer and then develop yellow tones in autumn before falling. It typically grows to 4 m tall and 2 m wide but can be trimmed as necessary. This variety grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, semi-sheltered site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. “Royal Purple” makes for a lovely specimen, and is commonly added a mixed planting, used in avenue plantings, or planted as a cluster for a stunning display. The beauty of this tree will please no matter where it is planted.
