Commonly known as the Star Magnolia, this variety is grown for its flowers and compact growth. Dark pink flower buds open in spring to reveal star shaped, white flowers. The fragrant blooms appear just before the lush, green leaves emerge. The leaves age to become dark green then develop yellow tones in autumn before falling. It typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide and can be trimmed as necessary. This variety grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, semi-sheltered site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. The Star Magnolia in commonly grown as a specimen, added to a mixed planting, included in a “white” garden, or planted as a cluster for a stunning display. The beauty of this tree will please no matter where it is planted.
