Magnolia virginiana (Sweetbay Magnolia) Details

Magnolia virginiana, commonly known as the Sweetbay Magnolia, is a stunning variety due to its spectacular and fragrant flowers. It bears masses of large and showy, cream-coloured flowers with a velvet-texture during spring and into summer. The foliage is lush and glossy green with silvery undersides. It grows with a rounded habit to about 8 m tall and to 5 m tall, though it can be contained with trimming. The Sweetbay Magnolia grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. In cooler environments it will be deciduous but can be evergreen or semi-evergreen in warmer regions. Magnolia virginiana is commonly grown as a specimen, added to a mixed planting, included in cottage gardens, or planted as a backdrop for smaller plants.
