“Vulcan” is a stunning variety of Magnolia due to its spectacular and fragrant flowers. It bears masses of large and showy, semi-double, rose-red flowers through late winter and early spring which are borne on the naked stems before the foliage emerges. The lush foliage is borne soon after and is dark green and takes on yellow tones in autumn before falling. It typically grows to 5 m tall and 3 m wide and can easily be contained with trimming. This variety grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. “Vulcan” is commonly grown as a specimen, added to a mixed planting, included in cottage gardens, or planted as a backdrop for smaller plants.
