“Plena” is a variety of Crabapple and is grown for its amazing flowers and colourful fruit. Pink buds open into large, double, soft-pink blossoms in spring just as the foliage emerges. The fragrant flowers result in large crops of small, green-yellow fruit which is often made into Crabapple jelly. The glossy, green leaves develop orange and red tones in autumn before falling. It grows with a vase shape to about 4 m tall and 3 m wide and can be contained with trimming. Best performance with this tree is achieved when it is grown in full sun on a fertile, well-drained site, protected from wind. It is tolerant of cool climates and frost, though late frosts in spring can reduce yields. “Plena” is commonly grown as a specimen, maintained in a courtyard garden, included in a cottage garden, or used for avenue planting.
