“Jack Humm” is a variety of Crabapple grown for its prolific flowering and colourful fruits. It bears masses of crimson buds that open into showy, single, white flowers in spring with a hint of pink. These result in small, red fruit in autumn which attract all manner of wildlife. The foliage in spring emerges green, ages to a darker green, then develops yellow tones in autumn before falling. The branches are held with a horizontal, if not somewhat pendulous nature. It typically grows to 3 m tall and 4 m wide and can easily be contained with trimming. Best performance with this variety is achieved when it is positioned in full sun on a fertile, well-drained site, protected from wind. It is tolerant of cool climates and frost, though late frosts in spring can reduce yields. “Jack Humm” is commonly grown as a specimen, maintained in a courtyard garden, or included in a mixed planting.
