Malus John Downie is a variety of Crabapple that bears masses of pink buds that open into showy, single, white flowers that literally transform the tree in spring. These result in small, orange-red fruit in autumn. The foliage in spring emerges green, ages to a darker green, and then develops yellow tones in autumn before falling as it grows to 5 m tall and 4 m wide. Malus John Downie is a variety of Crabapple grown for its flowering and colourful fruits. Through spring it bears masses of pink buds that open into showy, single, white flowers that literally transform the tree. These result in small, orange-red fruit in autumn which attract all manner of wildlife. The foliage in spring emerges green, ages to a darker green, and then develops yellow tones in autumn before falling. It typically grows to 5 m tall and 4 m wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Malus John Downie performs best when grown in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site that does not dry out. It is tolerant of frost and cool climates.
