“Strathmore” is a variety of Crabapple grown for its amazing flowers and colourful fruits. Red flower buds open into large, deep pink flowers in spring just as the bronze-red foliage emerges. The flowers result in large crops of small, red fruit which can be made into Crabapple jelly but are also loved by birds. The leaves darken to green during summer then develop scarlet red shades in autumn before falling. It grows with a narrow, columnar habit to about 4 m tall and 2.5 m wide, though can be contained with trimming. Best performance with this tree is achieved when grown in full sun on a fertile, well-drained site, protected from wind. It is tolerant of cool climates and frost, though late frosts in spring can reduce yields. “Strathmore” is commonly grown as a specimen, maintained in a courtyard garden, included in a cottage garden, or used for avenue planting.
