Commonly known as the Dawn Redwood, this is a lovely, deciduous tree native to China. It features fine, needle like, rich-green leaves which turn colourful shades of pink, gold, and red-brown in autumn before falling. This stately tree grows with a narrow and conical shape to about 30 m tall and 8 m wide, preferring a full sun position and a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, extended dry periods, moderate wind, and a wide range of soil conditions, including wet and heavy soils. The Dawn Redwood is commonly grown as a specimen, grown for timber, used to help with erosion control, planted for shelter, or grown around large water features such as ponds and lakes.
