Metrosideros umbellata, commonly known as Southern Rata, is a NZ native tree that grows to about 15 m tall and 3 m wide. It is slow-growing and produces small, dark-green leaves. The attraction of this tree are the brilliant red flowers in summer as the tree matures. It is tolerant of poor soils, dry periods, frost once established, and coastal climates.
