Nestegis apetala, commonly known as Coastal Maire, is a small and handsome NZ native tree. It grows with a stout, straight trunk up to 6 m tall and bears a broad crown, 4 m wide, made up of glossy, leathery, dark green leaves. Small flowers without petals are produced in spring and are followed by small, red-yellow fruits which are great for attracting birds. Nestegis apetala is most suited for adding to native plantings or including in revegetation projects.
