Photinia serratifolia

Chinese Photinia, Chinese Hawthorn, Taiwanese Photinia, Oriental Photinia

Photinia serratifolia is a small, evergreen tree that is grown for its lush and glossy foliage. New growth is red and ages to become mid-dark green which results in a glossy plant with dual colouring through spring and summer. This quick growing evergreen can reach 10 m tall and 3 m wide but can be contained with trimming. Photinia serratifolia is commonly grown as an attractive and dense hedge but is also well suited to being used for shelter and screening, and being grown as a specimen tree.

Photinia serratifolia red robin hedge spacing

The Photinia serratifolia red robin hedge spacing is generally 50 cm between the plants. If you want the hedge to fill in faster, you can shorten the spacing to 40 cm. However, going wider than 50 cm will have two effects. The first is that the gap between the plants at the base will be harder to fill in and this can cause frustration. The second is that the plants will tend to grow wider rather than upward. At a closer spacing the plants compete for light, and in doing so, they push each other upwards. Therefore, The Plant Company recommends a 40-50 cm spacing to achieve an amazing hedge.

What is the growth rate of the Photinia serratifolia tree?

The growth rate of a Photinia serratifolia tree depends on where it is positioned and how well it is cared for. In a warm climate with good growing conditions, it will grow to 10 m tall and 3 m wide in about 10-15 years. Where anything impedes the growth of these plants such as drought, wind exposure, cold climates it will grow at a slower rate. While this shrub can grow to 10 m tall, it is often clipped to smaller sizes and often into a hedge. Overall, the growth rate is considered medium relative to other hedging plants.

Photinia serratifolia smell

The flowers of Photinia serratifolia are known to have a strong and generally considered unpleasant smell, often described as being similar to that of human semen. While the foliage itself doesn't have a notable fragrance, the scent of the flowers, which bloom in spring and typically last for one to two weeks, can be quite pervasive and noticeable. Therefore, if you are near a Photinia serratifolia in bloom, you are likely to notice a strong, somewhat offensive odour emanating from the flowers.
