Salix caprea, commonly known as the Pussy Willow or Kilmarnock Willow, is a deciduous tree grown for its impressive flowers. Before the foliage emerges in late winter, male trees produce a showy display of pink-grey, woolly flowers (catkins). The display is both unusual and extraordinary. The foliage comprises bright green leaves, which age to dark green, then develop yellow tones in autumn before falling as it grows to 7 m tall and 4 m wide. Salix caprea is commonly used for hedging, planting around water features, to provide winter interest, or as a feature in a mixed planting.

Salix caprea Details

Salix caprea, commonly known as the Pussy Willow or Kilmarnock Willow, is a deciduous tree grown for its impressive flowers. Before the foliage emerges in late winter, male trees produce a showy display of pink-grey, woolly flowers (catkins). Female trees produce smaller, greenish catkins. The display is both unusual and extraordinary. The foliage comprises bright green leaves, which age to dark green, then develop yellow tones in autumn before falling. It typically grows to 7 m tall and 4 m wide but can easily be trimmed to sizes much less than this. This tree performs best in full sun or partial shade on soils that remain consistently moist. It will tolerate frost and cool climates but does not do well with extended dry periods. Salix caprea is commonly used for hedging, planting around water features, to provide winter interest, or as a feature in a mixed planting.
