Salix magnifica Details

Salix magnifica, commonly known as the Willow Magnolia, is a deciduous tree grown for its impressive flowers and foliage. During spring the tree produces showy, dark red or white flowers (catkins). The leaves are broad, Magnolia-like in appearance, leathery, and are dark green. They often have a purple-red undertone which becomes more prominent in autumn before the leaves fall. It typically grows to 6 m tall and the same wide but can be trimmed to sizes much less than this. This tree performs best in full sun or partial shade on soils that remain consistently moist. It will tolerate frost and cool climates but does not do well with extended dry periods. Salix magnifica is commonly planted around water features, grown as a specimen, or used as a feature in a mixed planting.
