It gets its common name from the contorted nature of the stems. The fine and lush foliage emerges mid-green in spring, ages to a darker green, then develops yellow tones in autumn before falling as it grows to 15 m tall and 8 m wide. Salix matsudana Tortuosa is commonly planted around water features, grown as a specimen, or added to a mixed planting in a large garden.
