Salix pentandra Details

Salix pentandra, commonly known as the Bay Willow, is a deciduous tree grown for its impressive flowers and foliage. During spring the tree produces showy, yellows (catkins) on male plants and smaller, green catkins on female plants. On female plants these result in white, woolly, seed structures. The leaves are Bay Tree-like in appearance, lush, leathery, and glossy, dark green. They develop yellow tones in in autumn before the leaves fall. It typically grows to 6 m tall and the same wide but can be trimmed to sizes much less than this. This tree performs best in full sun or partial shade on soils that remain consistently moist. It will tolerate frost and cool climates but does not do well with extended dry periods. Salix pentandra is commonly planted around water features, grown as a specimen, or used as a feature in a mixed planting.
