Salix Tortuosa Aurea Details

Salix tortuosa Aurea, commonly known as the Corkscrew Willow or Tortured Willow Tree, is grown for its interesting, colourful stems and foliage. The golden stems have a contorted nature, hence the common names. The fine and lush foliage emerges mid-green in spring, ages to a darker green, then develops yellow tones in autumn before falling. It grows with a pendulous growth habit to about 15 m tall and 8 m wide though can be contained to sizes less than this. This tree performs best when grown in full sun or partial shade on soils that remain consistently moist. It will tolerate frost and cool climates but does not do well with extended dry periods. Salix tortuosa Aurea is commonly used for planting around water features, grown as a specimen, providing winter interest, or added to a mixed planting in a large garden. It is also well suited to riparian planting to assist with reducing erosion.
