Sequoia sempervirens Details

Sequoia sempervirens, commonly known as Redwood, is a large and stately, evergreen tree. It is aptly named for its red coloured bark and wood. It features feathery, dark green foliage held on broad branches that emerge from a central stem. The bark is distinctly soft to touch. It grows with a conical shape and will eventually reach 50 m tall and 20 m wide if space allows. Best results with this tree are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of coastal environments, exposed sites, dry periods, cool climates, frost, and most soil conditions, except extreme wet. Redwoods are commonly grown as a specimen or planted to provide shelter and screening. They are also often grown specifically for timber production with the wood used for furniture making or cabinetry.
