Sophora longicarinata is a small and graceful variety of Kowhai. It features fine and dainty, green foliage that is held with a weeping habit. Yellow, bell like flowers are produced en masse through spring and are great for attracting birds and bees. The flowers literally transform this small tree into something quite spectacular. It typically grows to 5 m tall and 3 m wide with a somewhat rounded shape and can be trimmed as necessary. Best results with this variety are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained, moderately sheltered site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, periods of dry, and poorer soils. Sophora longicarinata is commonly grown as a specimen, added to a mixed planting, planted to attract birds, or included in a native planting.
