Syzygium maire, commonly known as Swamp Maire or Maire Tawake, is a NZ native tree that typically grows to 8 m tall and 4 m wide with a buttressed trunk and aerial roots. The leaves are small, oval, olive-green, and often mottled and blistered. It produces small, white flowers in spring which are followed by red berries. Syzygium maire is commonly planted in damp areas and is ideal for revegetation planting or including in a native planting.

Swamp Maire

Swamp Maire, scientifically known as Syzygium maire, is a NZ native tree that grows naturally in swamps, alongside streams, in forests and scrubby areas. It typically grows to 8 m tall and 4 m wide with a buttressed trunk and aerial roots. The leaves are small, oval, olive-green, and often mottled and blistered. It produces small, white flowers in spring which are followed by red berries. Syzygium maire requires good moisture all year round and grows well in swampy conditions. It is frost tender when young and requires a full sun or partial shade position. It will also grow well on well-drained sites. Swamp Maire is commonly planted in damp areas and is ideal for revegetation planting or including in a native planting.
