Ulmus minor, Field Elm, Ulmus carpinifolia, Smooth Leaf Elm, Field Elm Tree
Ulmus carpinifolia (also known as Ulmus minor) is commonly called the Field Elm or Smooth Leaf Elm. It is a stately, deciduous tree grown for its autumn colours. The leaves emerge a fresh green colour in spring, age to dark green, then develop golden-yellow tones in autumn before falling. The Field Elm grows with an upright and somewhat narrow habit to about 20 m tall and 8 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site with some shelter. Ulmus carpinifolia is commonly grown as a specimen in parks or a large garden.
