The stems are borne with an interesting herringbone pattern and are held with a gentle arch. The Chinese Elm typically grows with a broad and rounded habit to about 12 m tall and the same wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. Best results with this variety are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained site with some shelter. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, coastal environments, poor soils, and dry periods. Ulmus parvifolia is commonly grown as a specimen and makes for a wonderful shade tree.
