Weeping Brown Sedge

The Weeping Brown Sedge, Carex flagellifera Brown, is grown for its colourful and attractive foliage. This NZ native grass carries cascading, brown foliage as it grows to 80 cm tall and the same wide. It is a hardy grass that does prefer a full sun position with reasonable moisture levels but will tolerate dry conditions, wind, coastal conditions, frost, and almost any soil type. It requires very little maintenance apart from pulling out old leaves to encourage new leaves and prevent matting. The Weeping Brown Sedge is often planted around the base of larger trees, included in border plantings, mass planted either as a groundcover or on a bank, or included in coastal gardens. It also looks great in planters, particularly when the foliage can cascade to the ground.
